Our Story

Born from the Highlands. Steeped in Portland. Built for the Curious.

Every journey begins in a leaf — and unfolds into a legacy.

MWENDYA was born from a deep and abiding love for Kenya — its mist-draped tea highlands, its sun-warmed coffee valleys, and the vast, unhurried wilderness of the savannah. That love took root here in Portland, Oregon, where our storefront became a place for tea lovers to gather, explore, and slow down. And it continues, across the ocean, on guided safari journeys that bring our guests into the very land where the finest teas and coffees in the world are grown.

We are a tea brand. A gathering place. And a gateway to one of the most extraordinary countries on earth.

Our Portland Home

Step into our Portland storefront and you step into Kenya — in the gentlest way. The air carries the warm, grassy notes of high-grown Kenyan teas. The shelves hold single-origin loose-leaf blends, sourced directly from estate farms and women-run cooperatives in the highlands. Every tea we carry has a provenance, a story, and a reason to be savoured slowly.

We also host Afternoon Tea experiences and Tea Time celebrations — intimate gatherings designed to honour the ritual of tea in the way it deserves: unhurried, beautiful, and shared. Whether it's a private celebration, a curated tasting for friends, or a seasonal Afternoon Tea service, our events are designed to bring the warmth of Kenya's tea culture into your everyday life here in the Pacific Northwest.

Loose-Leaf, Sourced with Intention

Kenya's highlands produce some of the world's most celebrated teas — bright, muscatel-kissed leaves grown at altitude, picked by hand, dried in highland air. We work directly with the farmers and cooperatives who tend these gardens, choosing every blend not only for exceptional flavour, but for the integrity behind it: sustainable practices, fair relationships, and deep respect for the land.

When you brew a cup of MWENDYA tea, you are tasting a place. A specific altitude. A specific community. A specific season. That is the only kind of tea we sell.

From Cup to Safari — The MWENDYA Journey

For those who want to go further, we go all the way. MWENDYA's guided safari experiences take tea lovers and curious travellers directly to the source — into Kenya's tea estates, coffee farms, and the sweeping wilderness of the Maasai Mara.

No other country on earth offers this convergence: the agricultural richness of the highlands and the raw, humbling beauty of the wild — within a single week's journey. Our journeys are small by design (no more than twelve guests), unhurried in pace, and led by people who have spent lifetimes learning this land. Think master-taster workshops, private estate access, game drives at golden hour, and an African Afternoon Tea farewell ceremony under the Nairobi sky.

This is where the cup becomes a journey. And the journey becomes something you carry home forever.

Sourcing & Partnerships

Every partner we work with — from Portland event hosts to Kenyan estate farmers and licensed safari guides — is chosen for the quality of what they offer and the integrity of how they offer it. We support women-run cooperatives, preserve wildlife corridors, and honour the cultural heritage of the communities we move through. When you choose MWENDYA, you are participating in something larger than a purchase.
